If you're ordering Metso crusher wear parts based on unit price alone, you're almost certainly spending more than you need to. That was my hard lesson in 2022, when a "bargain" set of jaw plates for our C106 ended up costing 40% more than the Metso genuine parts we should have bought in the first place—after accounting for premature failure, downtime, and a rushed emergency order.

I'm an office administrator for a mid-size mining support company—about 80 employees across two locations. I manage all our parts procurement for crushers, pumps, and related equipment: roughly $350k annually across 8 vendors. I report to both operations and finance, so I feel the squeeze when a low-price decision looks good on paper but bombs in the pit.

My First Mistake: Shopping on Price Alone

  • Unit price (obviously)—but that's just the start.
  • Shipping & handling—some suppliers offer "free" shipping but bake it into the base. Others are transparent. I ask for a landed-cost breakdown.
  • Lead time certainty—a quote that's 20% cheaper but has 6-week lead time vs. 2 weeks from Metso? That delay costs production money.
  • Wear life & performance data—genuine Metso jaw crusher parts come with documented wear curves. Third-party parts often don't. I need that data to calculate cost per ton.
  • Rush fees & emergency orders—when a liner fails early (and I think I might be misremembering the exact failure rate, but it was significant), can your supplier get you a replacement in 48 hours? Metso's dealer network made that possible for us. The discount supplier couldn't.
  • Setup & installation support—some parts need adjustment. If you're paying a mechanic to shim and fit a poorly cast liner, that's a TCO cost too.

The question isn't which quote is lowest. It's which part delivers the lowest cost per ton over its service life. That's the number that matters.

What I Learned About Metso Cone Crusher Parts

I've now worked with Metso genuine parts across our HP200 cone crusher, C106 jaw, and GP100 cone. Here's what surprised me:

The wear life consistency. Genuine Metso manganese liners have a predictable wear pattern. Not perfect—no liner is—but predictable enough that we can schedule replacements during planned downtime. With the generic parts, I never knew if I'd get 300 hours or 600. That uncertainty is expensive (ugh).

The automation compatibility. We run the IC70C cone crusher automation system. Plugging in a genuine Metso part means the system recognizes it, applies the right settings, and gives us accurate wear monitoring. Third-party parts? The system might still work, but I've seen inconsistent results (note to self: document this more carefully).

The dealer network. When a slurry pump impeller cracked unexpectedly—honestly, I'm still not sure why—our local Metso dealer had a replacement in three days. The generic supplier quoted two weeks. For a piece of equipment that's mission-critical, that speed has value.

When Genuine Parts Aren't the Answer

That said, I can only speak to mid-size B2B operations with predictable demand. If you're a small operation running a single crusher part-time, or you're dealing with obsolete equipment where genuine parts aren't available, the calculus might be different. Third-party suppliers can fill a real gap in those scenarios.

I've also found that for non-critical spares—parts you keep on the shelf "just in case"—price matters more. If the part rarely gets used, the TCO argument is weaker. But for high-wear components that see daily action? That's where the genuine vs. generic calculation tips decisively.

And I should note: our experience has been with standard crusher models (GP, HP, C series). If you're running older Symons or Nordberg legacy equipment, your options and trade-offs may be different.

So yes, I buy genuine Metso crusher parts now. Not because I'm a brand loyalist, but because I did the math. The lowest purchase price very rarely equals the lowest total cost. And in a production environment, that lesson costs real money to learn.
