I'm the person who reviews equipment and parts orders before they get installed at our aggregate plant. What I do is quality control on the purchasing side: specs, service history, delivery method, and whether we can actually use the thing once it arrives. Used Metso parts can be a smart move if they're non-wear items from a known, traceable removal. But that phrase covers way too many situations. A used jaw plate with half its wear life remaining is not the same as a used countershaft that was pulled because the original machine was upgraded. I rarely approve used wear parts. You don't know what those liners processed, whether the crusher was fed correctly, or how many times the setting was changed under load. I need a removal reason, photos from enough angles, and preferably a report from someone who actually inspected the part.
I wasn't always this strict. In Q1 2024, we accepted a used countershaft assembly because the price was less than half the new price and the seller said it was inspected. It measured fine at the surface, but after a few days in service the bearing seat failed and damaged the countershaft bore. That mistake cost us a $22,000 redo and nine days of lost production. Now our purchase order says used parts require documented inspection before shipment. If the seller doesn't want to provide that, I don't want the part.
I get this question after someone searches for Metso slurry pump handbook pdf and finds scanned copies on document-sharing sites. I'm not going to say every copy is fake. But I am going to say that old technical handbooks are not always current. Pump selection and slurry piping rules depend on actual solids, flow, head, and system layout. Using a decades-old PDF to specify a pump for a plant change is how mistakes get specified.
If you can find the current handbook through Metso's official product page, or get it through an authorized distributor, that's your source. If not, ask for an application engineer from the supplier. I'd rather wait for the right document than accept a random file that looks professional. This is also a good quality test. The supplier who takes time to give you proper documentation usually takes time to make sure the equipment matches your process.
I'm not a tractor expert, so I won't try to tell you how to compare PTO horsepower or hydraulic flow. What I will say is that tractor data—hours, service records, and operating history—is exactly the kind of evidence we require when buying used mobile processing equipment. If someone is selling a tracked jaw plant or a power screen and they only give you a clean walkaround video, that's not enough.
For a used crusher, the equivalent of tractor data is the automation and maintenance log: operating hours, engine hours if it's a mobile unit, alarm events, and oil analysis reports. If those records are missing, you aren't buying a bargain. You're buying someone else's uncertainty. I won't stop you from negotiating a lower price, but I'll treat that missing data as a cost, not a convenience.
IC70C is Metso's cone crusher control system. It monitors power, pressure, and other operating conditions, then adjusts settings to keep the machine in the right operating window. I didn't fully understand its value until we ran two almost identical cone crusher lines side by side. One was adjusted manually by an experienced operator. The other used IC70C to manage the chamber as feed conditions changed. The automated one made more consistent product, and the operators had fewer alarms to run down.
From a quality inspection point of view, automation also creates records. When we look at a used Metso cone, I ask for event history from the control system. Repeated stall events or high-pressure cycles tell you how the machine lived. A manual crusher might look clean on the frame but carry past maintenance stress in the main components. Automation is not a replacement for maintenance, but it gives you a trail. That trail is worth something on a purchase decision.
The easy answer is to let the freight company decide. I don't. If a shipment arrives on the wrong type of equipment, we lose half a day on the receiving dock. For smaller components and wear part pallets, a straight truck with a liftgate is often fine. It is easier to move around the plant and does not need a semi-tractor to detach. For larger items, a tractor-trailer might be necessary. But if the part is oversize or over length, the difference matters even more.
Before I approve an order, I ask the shipper three questions: straight truck or tractor-trailer, liftgate or dock delivery, and minimum approach width at our gate. It sounds administrative, but a 40-foot trailer can't turn around in a 20-foot aisle. I'd rather reject an incomplete freight quote than let the driver show up with equipment that doesn't fit our site.

A backhoe is usually the first choice when you need to travel between job sites and do moderate digging, trenching, or loading. It's a familiar machine with a loader bucket in front and a digger in back, and it can move under its own power on roads. An excavator is the right choice when you need reach, swing, and digging force in a tight footprint.
Backhoes are strong for utility work and maintenance cleanup around a plant. Excavators are stronger for deep excavation, lifting heavy pipe, and working against a steep bank. If your task is mostly mucking out a feeder pocket, a backhoe can be enough. If you're cutting below grade for a new hopper foundation, the excavator gives you the reach and breakout force. The rental price difference is not worth saving if the backhoe can't reach the bottom of the hole.
I've become cautious when a vendor says they can handle every part of the project—equipment, installation, spare parts, and process engineering. Some can. More often, a company that sells everything is a broker for at least half of it. The quality risk appears later, when a problem crosses boundaries. Is it the part, the installation, the parameters, or the support? Nobody wants to own it.
A supplier that says this is not our specialty, but here is someone who does it better, earns trust. I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who promises everything. That's true when we are buying Metso parts, and it's also true when we choose a local contractor. The best vendor I work with has told me twice to go somewhere else for items outside their scope. They still get our orders for what they do well.
