If you're choosing a crusher based on Metso vs Sandvik market share articles, you're using the wrong data. Market share tells you who has the biggest installed base, not whose distribution network is actually reachable when something breaks.
Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), any claim of market leadership must be truthful and substantiated with evidence. If a supplier claims they're "the leader," ask for the data behind it. If they can't show dealer counts, parts availability, and response times, it's a marketing slide, not a procurement fact.
At a site in Crewe, we had an old tractor fitted with a scraper attachment for cleanup work. The tractor ran, but diesel consumption was noticeably worse than it should have been. If peak pressure is below the manufacturer's spec, or pressure drops quickly after shutdown, you've found a problem. It might be the pump, a clogged filter, or a suction line leak—but you won't know until you measure it. To be fair, TCO doesn't always point to switching brands. If you already have a stock of Sandvik parts and a solid service agreement in place, staying with that platform might be the smarter call. That's not a weakness in the TCO method—it's just the method telling you that your existing infrastructure has value.
TCO also doesn't mean "most expensive wins." It simply means the quote that includes all the costs—wear parts, service labor, downtime risk, and local support—is the one worth signing. For short-term projects or very low production volumes, the cheapest machine might genuinely be enough. The method applies when the equipment will be part of your operation for years, not weeks.
So when you see a market share debate about Metso and Sandvik, treat it as a starting point, not an answer. The answer depends on your site, your support network, and the hidden costs that only show up in real operating data. That's what keeps a crusher profitable—and what keeps a budget on track.
