The HP300 is a secondary or tertiary cone crusher. It takes material that has already been crushed and shapes it into a more consistent, cubical product.

That one difference explains most of the other differences. If you need a machine to handle 600 mm blasted rock, the HP300 is not your answer. If you need a machine to make a clean 19 mm minus product, the C106 might be the wrong tool.

Dimension 1: Feed size and crushing chamber

According to Metso's product documentation (metso.com, as of Q1 2025), the Metso C106 jaw crusher has a feed opening of 1,060 x 700 mm (42 by 28 in). Depending on the rock and the closed side setting, it can accept feed up to roughly 600 mm. That is serious primary capacity. You do not need to blast material into pebbles before it reaches the C106.

The HP300 cone crusher, on the other hand, is designed for a much smaller feed, typically up to about 230 mm depending on the liner configuration. If you feed it something bigger, you are asking the chamber to do something it was not designed to do. That is not a criticism of the HP300. It is a division of labor.

Think of it this way: an undersized jaw feeding an already overtaxed cone is like a squatted truck trying to pull a loaded trailer. The stance might look serious, but the suspension geometry is wrong for the load.

Dimension 2: Production capacity and product quality

The C106 can produce roughly 110 to 320 metric tons per hour depending on closed side setting, feed conditions, and crushing stage. The HP300 can produce up to about 250 metric tons per hour in secondary applications, and often more in tertiary duty, depending on cavity choice and settings. These numbers come from Metso's C Series and HP Series product literature (Q1 2025), but capacities vary with feed and application.

Capacity is not the only number that matters, though. The HP300 cone is the better shape-control machine. It gives you a tighter gradation and more cubical product, which is exactly what concrete and asphalt specs require. The C106 jaw gives you more reduction in one pass. It is a brute, not a sculptor.

So if your bottleneck is primary reduction, the C106 wins. If your bottleneck is product shape and consistency, the HP300 wins. Let the application decide, not the peak tph figure in the brochure.

Dimension 3: Automation and operator workload

This is where the HP300 pulls away. Metso's IC70C system is designed for the HP Series. It monitors crusher pressure, power draw, and cavity level, and it can adjust the closed side setting automatically to keep the crusher loaded efficiently. For a plant with a small crew, that is a real advantage.

The C106 is simpler. There is less to go wrong, and it is more tolerant of uneven feeding. To be fair, if you have an experienced operator, the C106 gives you a lot of control with very little complexity. But if you want the machine to make more decisions for itself, the HP300 with IC70C is close to a no-brainer.

Dimension 4: Parts supply, especially the HP300 pinion question

Here is the conclusion I did not expect when I started this comparison: for a new plant that does not already have primary crushing, the C106 is usually the safer first purchase, even though the HP300 has more advanced automation. Why? Because the jaw solves the first problem in the crushing circuit. If you cannot get blasted rock down to a cone-sized feed, nothing downstream works.

The HP300 only performs its magic after a primary crusher has done the dirty work. Buying it first is like putting a custom paint job on your truck before checking the frame. It looks good, but the foundation is not there.

So which one do you buy?

If your feed is run-of-mine or blasted rock and you are building a new circuit, start with the Metso C106 jaw crusher. It is a workhorse, it tolerates rough feed, and it gives you the reduction you need before any cone enters the picture.

If you already have a primary crusher and you are upgrading your secondary or tertiary stage, the HP300 cone is the better fit. Pair it with the IC70C automation and you have a plant that can run consistently with less operator babysitting.

If you are still on the fence, I will put it this way: the C106 is about getting the job done; the HP300 is about doing the job better. You cannot skip the first step to get to the second.
