Back in March, my operations manager walked over and dropped a requisition form in front of me. "Cone crusher," it said. "Metso HP200."
Let me tell you where this is coming from: I'm the office administrator for a roughly 130-person construction and aggregate company. When I took over purchasing in 2020, my world was PPE, printer toner, tooling, and safety supplies. Five years later, I handle about $2 million a year in purchases across 30 vendors, and I report to both operations and finance. But a 20-ton rock crusher had never once appeared on my list.
I looked at the form, then at my manager. "A rock crusher?"
"Yes," he said. "We ran one at the last site. Best machine for our stone. Find us one."
My manager liked the HP200 because the crew already knew how to run it, and our local dealer stocked the parts. In a business where a machine sitting idle is money draining away, choosing something familiar was a way to lower risk.
Not ideal. But workable.
The first lesson: Metso's product lineup is bigger than I expected. C-series jaw crushers. GP-series and HP-series cone crushers. Impact crushers on top of that. To me, they all looked like gray machines with serious teeth. To the equipment world, they're different tools for different jobs. I let the engineers sort out which goes where and focused on what I could control: the buying process.
The dealer rep deserves credit. Instead of making me feel dumb, he asked about the whole requisition. That's how the Metso Slurry Pump Handbook 2020 entered my life. The list included a slurry pump, and I had no honest idea what that was.
Between you and me, I wasn't even sure how a slurry pump differed from a gas pump. A gas pump sits at a fuel station and measures gasoline into a tank. A slurry pump moves mining slurry—abrasive water, rock dust, sand—through a pipeline. Both are called pumps the way a calculator and a supercomputer are both called computers. Technically true. Completely unhelpful.
Why does this matter? Because if you can't tell the machines apart, you can't tell whether the price you're quoted even applies to the same machine. The handbook gave me a vocabulary. It explains how to think about pump selection: what's in the slurry, how abrasive it is, what flow and head the system needs. I didn't need to become a pump engineer. I needed to know what questions the answers depend on.
The handbook also told me something about Metso. They publish real technical documentation for free. A manufacturer that does that is betting on informed customers, and in my experience that's a good bet.
Parts support was another reason we stayed with Metso. Genuine wear parts were stocked a few hours away. For a remote site, that's not a detail—it's a factor. A crusher waiting a week for a liner is a crusher that isn't making anyone money.
With some vocabulary under my belt, I moved to price discovery. We collected three quotes for a Metso HP200 cone crusher for sale: a new unit, a reconditioned 2016 machine with warranty, and a 2012 unit with no warranty and a very attractive number.
The 2012 unit is where I almost made my mistake.
From the outside, buying a used crusher looks like buying a used car. Check the hours, kick the tires, shake hands. The reality is that hours are only one input. The main frame's condition, the service history of the wear parts, the automation package, the quality of the rebuild—all of that matters more. You're not buying a metal box. You're buying a machine that will need maintenance, and those costs come out of someone's budget.
The question everyone asks is "What's your best price?" The question I should have started with is "What's included in that price?"
When I asked about the 2012 unit, the picture changed. Thirty-eight thousand hours. No inspection report. No record of when the liners were last replaced. No automation package. The seller said it was in good shape, and maybe it was. But I couldn't verify any of it, and "maybe" is a weak basis for a purchase this size.
The biggest red flag, in hindsight, wasn't the number. It was the one-page quote. Compare that to the reconditioned unit's packet, which came with photos, service records, and a list of replaced parts. That difference was the real data.
The reconditioned 2016 machine also had a Metso IC70C automation system. IC70C is the crusher's control system: it monitors what the machine is doing and adjusts operating parameters to keep it in a safe range. The 2012 unit didn't have it. Retrofitting later would have wiped out most of the price gap.
We bought the 2016 unit. It cost about 25% more than the older machine, but the total cost of ownership was clearer: warranty, fresh wear parts, automation, and a dealer who stood behind his work. Finance asked why we were spending more. I walked them through the liner costs, the automation difference, and how the older machine would have needed more manual attention every shift. By the end, the premium didn't look like a premium.
On pricing: our three quotes in March 2025 ranged from roughly $180,000 to $420,000 depending on year, condition, and what was included. That's a snapshot of one moment. Prices move, so verify current rates.
While the HP200 was in transit, the crew prepped the site. I drove out to deliver paperwork and found the site lead standing over a small form hole with a bag of concrete and a 5-gallon bucket. He looked at me. I looked at him.
"Starter panel pad," he said. "Nobody ordered the mini mixer for one pad."
And that is how I learned how to mix concrete in a bucket.
I had watched a video the night before, which meant I brought exactly the confidence of someone who had never done it. The site lead let me go first. The process is straightforward: water first, then mix, then a drill with a paddle attachment. Run the drill, scrape the bottom, add water in small doses. It looks like thick brownie batter when it's ready—I know because I have now mixed concrete in a bucket, with a paddle attachment, in a work boot that will never fully recover (ugh).
Not glamorous. Workable. And honestly, a little satisfying.
The crusher arrived, the pad cured, and the machine has been running since June. The whole process took about eight weeks from requisition to delivery. Here's what I'd pass along:
Honestly, I'm still not sure why the used equipment market is as opaque as it is. My best guess is that every seller values an undocumented history differently—which is exactly why documented history is worth so much.
I'm not a mechanical engineer, so I can't speak to the detailed engineering of a cone crusher. What I can tell you from a purchasing perspective is that the process doesn't require you to be an expert. It requires you to ask hard questions, read the material, and wait for real answers. An informed buyer asks better questions and makes better decisions. After this project, I believe that more than ever.
