The fleet needed the same treatment. I finally sold the Mustang truck—it had cost us almost $5,000 in repairs over two years, and I couldn't justify another year. The Subaru truck, on the other hand, was more dependable than we gave it credit for. We spent $900 on proper servicing—brakes, timing belt, fluid flushes—and it's been fine since. Sometimes fixing what you own beats replacing everything.
Around the same time, we had to mount a new conveyor frame to the concrete floor of the maintenance bay. That's where I learned how to drill into concrete the hard way. For critical equipment, buy genuine. Set up the automation that gives you data on machine health. Track lead times and order early. And never let a discount override your documentation requirements.
I'm not saying second-hand parts never have a place. They might be fine for a machine you're phasing out, or as a temporary fix while you wait for the right part. But for a crusher that everything depends on, the risk isn't the upfront price—it's the cost of being down.
There's something satisfying about a maintenance plan that runs on schedule. After the stress of that failed experiment, seeing our HP200 crush consistently month after month—with genuine liners, the IC70C watching the wear, and the next parts order already scheduled—that's the payoff.
The crusher is still running today. So is our company. And before I place any order, I still check: who's the supplier, what documentation comes with it, and what will it cost to run, not just to buy.
