A Cone Crusher Purchase Checklist: What a Procurement Manager Checks Before Signing

I'm a procurement manager at a mid-sized mining services company, and I've handled crushing equipment purchases for about six years. Our annual budget is around $1.2 million—maybe closer to $1.1M, I'd have to check the spreadsheet. I've compared quotes from 20+ vendors, tracked every invoice, and made enough mistakes to build a checklist.

Use this list when you're comparing cone crushers for a new plant or replacing a worn-out unit. It works whether you're buying a Metso, a Sandvik, or another OEM. There are 7 checks. No theory. Just what I do before I commit budget.

1. Confirm What the Crusher Actually Has to Do

This sounds obvious, but it's the first one I rush through when I shouldn't. You need numbers, not adjectives. What are the feed size, required closed side setting, tons per hour, moisture, and abrasiveness? Check whether the application is coarse crushing or fine reduction.

Once a junior engineer asked me, "what is a crane?" in a plant walk. At first I thought he was joking. He wasn't. That question taught me to never assume everyone on the buying team speaks the same equipment language. Before comparing models, make sure the technical specs are written down in a language everyone understands.

2. Calculate Total Cost of Ownership, Not Just Price

In 2023 I compared quotes for a mid-sized cone crusher. Vendor A quoted $285,000. Vendor B quoted $242,000. I almost went with B until I added freight, installation, commissioning time, and—the big one—wear parts per ton. Our feed was abrasive quartzite. B's recommended liners wore out about 25% faster in that duty. Over five years, that difference added up to roughly $38,000. So B was actually more expensive over time, despite the lower sticker price. Let me rephrase that: the cheaper quote made the plant look good in Q2 and cost us more in the long run.

But market share tells you which vendor has the largest installed base, not which machine has the lowest cost per ton for your specific rock. Use share as a starting point, not a conclusion.

3. Inspect the Tramp Release System Before You Trust It

This is the step I see most buyers skip. On a cone crusher, tramp release allows uncrushable materials—like a steel bucket tooth—to pass through the crushing chamber without cracking the mainframe. If the tramp release system fails, a piece of metal will effectively destroy the crusher.

Take the Metso HP cone crusher tramp release system as an example. It uses hydraulic accumulators to allow the bowl to lift momentarily when it hits tramp metal, then quickly return to the original setting. The design is well-proven, but the system has to be serviced. Ask the vendor for the maintenance records, accumulator precharge value, and testing procedure. If the dealer can't explain the reset time, keep looking.

4. Compare Wear Parts on Cost Per Ton, Not Per Kilogram

Wear liners are where cone crusher economics are won or lost. I track two numbers: liner life in hours and cost per ton of finished product. Genuine Metso wear parts often cost more up front. That doesn't matter. What matters is the cost per ton over the liner's life. If a cheaper aftermarket liner gives you 35% lower life, it's not cheaper.

I built a simple cost calculator after getting burned on this twice. The first time, the "budget" liner wore out at 42 days instead of 60. The labor and downtime cost more than the savings. The surprise wasn't the price difference. It was how much hidden cost came with the downtime.

5. Decide Whether Automation Pays for Your Site

Automation changes cone crusher economics. If your operators are pushing feed rates inconsistently, a system like Metso's IC70C can adjust parameters automatically and alert you before small issues become big ones. This is not a luxury on every site, but it often pays for itself where feed quality varies or operator turnover is high.

6. Check the Local Parts and Service Network

A cone crusher is any good only if parts are available when you need them. If I remember correctly, we needed it in 3 weeks because of a planned shutdown. That local stock made the decision easy.

Do not assume all OEMs have equal coverage in your region. Ask for documented lead times and a list of in-country stocking locations. The phrase "we ship globally" means little if a bearing takes six weeks to clear customs.

7. Keep Auxiliary Equipment on a Separate Line—and Separate Checklist

When you're buying a crusher, the rest of the plant list can show up in the same quote: conveyors, screens, a concrete mixer for maintenance, pumps, and piping. I've seen a PO that bundled a concrete mixer and a slurry pump with a cone crusher to "simplify" procurement. It didn't simplify anything.

The concrete mixer was specified as a 2 m³ unit with a diesel engine. That part was fine. The slurry pump was another story. A "Willow pump" appeared on the list without the flow rate, total head, or solids handling requirement. The vendor assumed a standard slurry, and we got a pump that couldn't handle the size of solids in the tailings. We had to reorder and eat the cost.

So if you see a concrete mixer, a Willow pump, or anything else on the same quote, push it back. Make each item its own line with its own duty description. Mixing unrelated equipment in one procurement line creates a lot of room for hidden cost.

Common Mistakes I Keep Seeing

  • Buying on unit price. The "cheap" option cost us $1,200 in extra labor when the first liner change took twice as long. Price is only one variable.
  • Skipping tramp release maintenance. The third time a crusher tripped on tramp metal, I finally asked for the accumulator test log. No log existed. Don't assume the OEM's design works forever.
  • Believing uptime claims. No reputable OEM guarantees 100% uptime without maintenance conditions. Ask for planned maintenance interval, not a slogan.
  • Relying on memory for market data. Market share numbers shift by market definition and date. Read as of a specific quarter, not "recent years."

Bottom Line

The best cone crusher is the one that fits your duty, your wear part cost per ton, and your parts supply chain. If you're evaluating a Metso HP or any comparable unit, run the same checklist. Confirm the tramp release system is properly serviced, calculate TCO, and don't let a concrete mixer or Willow pump muddy your decision.

And if someone on the team asks "what is a crane?"—take it seriously. It's better to ask before signing than after.
